More than 30 Years of Chemical Synthesis at Endeavour Speciality Chemicals Ltd

Endeavour Speciality Chemicals is marking 32 years of chemical manufacturing this year. Our success in manufacturing aroma and speciality chemicals is based on the expertise we have developed in organic chemistry. This includes manufacturing a range of functional heterocycles, complex thiols and novel alcohols and esters.

We offer an extensive product range of high impact aroma and speciality chemicals that can be produced in gram to multi-kilogram quantities. We have the facility to scale-up production to multi-tonne quantities, if required and chemistry permitting, at our sister company Robinson Brothers Limited (UK). We work closely together to ensure product manufacture is seamlessly scaled and quality is reproduced.

“Here in Daventry, we have, through experience and technical know-how, become experts in handling and managing sulphur containing reagents such as hydrogen sulphide and methyl mercaptan. We perform chemistry at a volume that is between research scale and pilot plant scale which affords us flexibility and agility in our approach and methodology,” Dr Stewart House, General Manager.

As well as our existing product range, we can offer the following services.

  • Synthetic route development
  • Process optimisation
  • Custom synthesis
  • Contract/toll manufacturing services
  • Odour testing for QC purposes

We follow stringent quality control measures to ensure our products are manufactured to the highest quality. This includes following ISO22000 Food Safety Management, HACCP and GMP guidelines.

The Odour Panel!

The Odour Panel!

We have seen the demand for high impact aroma chemicals increase year on year as consumers demand more sophisticated flavours in their food and beverages. Using high impact aroma chemicals in a flavour formulation can enhance that particular flavour. We understand that it is important to produce a consistent odour profile to ensure the consumer experiences the same taste or smell every time.

Endeavour Speciality Chemicals has more than 30 years of experience in manufacturing high impact aroma chemicals. Our established manufacturing and quality control procedures ensure our aroma products are consistently produced to the very highest standards with reproducible odour profiles.

It is important to produce a consistent odour profile with a good product assay. The routine use of GCMS on all products is a crucial aspect of product profile control to enable the effect of very low-level impurities to be assessed. Our aroma products are assessed by our trained odour panel as part of quality control procedures.

“Odour assessment is a critical part of our business and as such the odour panel plays a vital role in ensuring that our products consistently meet our customers’ expectations. Being an odour panel member for over twenty years has taught me a great deal about the nuances of the odour profiles of our products. Our detailed processes and skill and knowledge of our distillation chemists, ensures our products have consistent odour profiles, every time they are produced” Dr Greig Milsom, R&D Manager.

As well as the odour profile of the product being tested, other analytical techniques used at Endeavour Speciality Chemicals to confirm consistency of product quality, including:

  • Gas chromatography
  • GCMS
  • HPLC
  • Acid value and water content (Karl Fischer)
  • Density & RI
  • Melting point and LOD

Endeavour Speciality Chemicals is ISO9001 Quality Management and ISO22000 Food Safety Management certified. Products hold Kosher certification. Further information is available upon request.

Pumpkin Spice flavour – A Halloween Treat

Pumpkin Spice flavour – A Halloween Treat

Traditional autumnal aromas, be that cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger or clove come to the forefront around Halloween – especially in the form of pumpkin spice flavour (it is widely reported, a famous coffee house sells over 20 million pumpkin spice lattes each year on their autumn menu in America!).  Indeed, in the UK this year (2022), pumpkin spice flavour has seen such an increase in popularity, that the same coffee chain has purportedly run out of pumpkin spice syrup in some stores, due to ‘high demand’ ahead of Halloween.

From a chemistry perspective, although there are greater than 340 flavour compounds in the natural spice mix, only 5-10% of these are needed for the human brain to recognise the general aroma and taste.  Some examples of these compounds include cinnamaldehyde (cinnamon), eugenol (clove), sabinene (nutmeg) and zingiberene (ginger).

Spice compounds alone are not enough to create an appealing flavour, however – heat is needed to alter the molecular profile (via the Maillard reaction) to elevate and enhance the flavour notes, producing (along with some other secret ingredients!) that familiar alluring autumnal aroma of that delicious decadent drink.

Endeavour Speciality Chemicals is a leading UK manufacturer of high-impact aroma molecules for the flavour and fragrance industry.  Our high-impact aroma chemicals are sold exclusively via our strategic partner Treatt – a global supplier of food and flavour ingredients with offices in the USA, UK and China.

Careers at Endeavour: Why do an industrial placement year whilst studying?

As students prepare for their end of year exams, we take a look at the career avenues available for those interested in further education.

Endeavour Speciality Chemicals has been taking industrial placement students since 2008. The placement is open to students who are enrolled on chemistry degree courses that have the option to take a year in industry. Whilst at Endeavour, the placement student is employed within the Research & Development department where they spend a year working in an industry setting on a synthetic chemistry project. The project is designed to be relevant to both the academic course and the needs of the business. Endeavour always strives to make the placement year as beneficial as possible for both the student and the company, as such we have had a clear run of 1st class awards for both the placement year and final degree for all of our past students to date.

Feature: James Harnedy took on a Placement Chemist role with Endeavour Speciality Chemicals in 2017-2018, whilst studying Medicinal and Biological Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. Carrying out his placement at Endeavour gave James a real insight into the role of a Chemist, as well as the practical theory and skills to apply to his degree. Now at the end of his final year of studies, James has decided to pursue a career in chemistry and has recently been offered a position as a Synthetic Chemist at a UK based Custom Research Organisation. “I know I wouldn’t have even been considered if it were not for my year at Endeavour”, said James. The practical experience and employability skills gained by doing an industrial placement year is invaluable when applying for a job amongst other graduate applicants.

Whilst working for Endeavour, students are encouraged to learn about the chemical manufacturing industry through industry publications, participating in meetings across departments and attending symposia. This increased awareness of the industry can allow students to make better informed decisions when decided what career path to pursue.
